Review: Graduate School, Ph.D. in Cell, Molecular and Genetic Biology
Degree Offered: Ph.D. in Cell, Molecular and Genetic Biology Format: Campus
Program Description: The Van Andel Institute Graduate School offers doctoral training in cell, molecular and genetic biology relevant to human health. Research by VAIGS students is conducted in the laboratories of the Van Andel Research Institute, an independent, private, non-profit organization that conducts research to identify and understand the function of genes and their protein products and the ways to apply this knowledge to diagnosis and therapeutics (translational research). VAIGS and VARI are located in Grand Rapids, the second largest city in Michigan, in the heart of a large and growing biomedical community. The VAIGS Ph.D. program promotes the transition of students into professional scientists through an innovative problem-based curriculum, translational research projects, exceptional facilities with core technology support, a distinguished faculty, and a culture of collaboration. VAIGS graduates will know current issues in biomedical science and the historical and clinical context of those issues. They will conduct original research by designing and executing experiments using latest life science techniques. They will be able to translate basic science to address problems of health and society; communicate effectively verbally, in writing, and graphically; and practice the highest ethical and professional standards. VAIGS supports the training of physician scientists through two programs; a dual degree (M.D./Ph.D.) in conjunction with Michigan State University, and a novel residency/Ph.D. program in conjunction with the Internal Medicine residency in Grand Rapid, Michigan. Accreditation: The accrediting body for the VAIGS is the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association International Student Requirements: Because of US Immigration visa rules, we are presently able to accept applications only from domestic students (U.S. citizens or permanent residents). We expect to encourage international applications in future years.
Financial Aid Offered: No
