Review: Biomedical Informatics

Degree Offered: Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics, Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics Format: Campus
Program Description: In today's data-intensive world, effectively managing information is critical to the processes and practices of health care and biomedical research. Biomedical informatics merges elements of computing, biostatistics and cognitive science with life sciences and health care practice. The award-winning faculty at ASU's Department of Biomedical Informatics (BMI) provide a strong research mandate, but with real-world applicability. Students in BMI's Master's and Ph.D. programs will work and learn in a clinical environment, seeing firsthand the practical applications of their research. BMI accomplishes this fusion of informatics theory with clinical usefulness by taking advantage of its unique location and partnerships. BMI it is located on the downtown Phoenix campus of the University of Arizona College of Medicine. The area is rapidly developing into a biomedical enterprise zone, with genomics research giant TGen located next door. Other partnerships with such programs as the Mayo Clinic, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Banner Health, among others, infuse the program with practical research mandates and clinical relevance. The M.S. in Biomedical Informatics is designed to meet the rapidly growing need for professionals in the field by integrating technical informatics and bioscience expertise with knowledge of the clinical environment. The Ph.D. in Biomedical Informatics includes the requirements of the M.S. core curriculum but also focuses on the development of in-depth expertise in a selected area of concentration. The deadline for fall 2010 applications is January 15, 2010. Please visit our graduate application page to learn more about our application process and requirements.
