Review: The Graduate School, Jewish Art and Visual Culture

Degree Offered: M.A.- Jewish Art and Visual Culture Format: Campus
Program Description: The Master's program in Jewish Art and Visual Culture is unique among university programs. It provides specialized training for students interested in a professional career in the field of Jewish art, and serious study opportunities for those interested in deepening their knowledge of the Jewish contribution to the visual arts. Students enrolled in this Master's program emerge with an understanding of Jewish art within the contexts of general art history and Jewish culture (in the larger sense). Two museum internships allow the student to become adept at art handling and cataloguing. Accreditation: Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Eligibility Requirements: 9 credits (three courses) in the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University or at the Bard Center for the Decorative Arts 12 credits (four courses) in Judaic studies from the following areas: Bible, rabbinics, Jewish history, and Jewish literature 15 credits (five courses) in Jewish art and visual culture, including Jewish Ceremonial Art in Context (offered alternate years during the fall semester) and two semesters of internship at the Jewish Museum or in The Library. # of Credits Required: 36 International Student Requirements: Applicants whose native language is other than English and who have not been educated at a college where English is the language of instruction must submit official scores of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum TOEFL score of 100 (Internet-based) is required. The Graduate School also may require that nonnative English speakers prove satisfactory proficiency by scoring at level 10 on the placement test administered by Columbia University's American Language Program (ALP).
