Review: M.A. in Psychology and Counseling

Degree Offered: M.A. - Psychology and Counseling Format: Campus, Online
Program Description: The Psychology & Counseling program at Goddard College is rooted in the principles of progressive education. It is a low-residency program for motivated students. Our devotion to student-centered, liberatory education is mirrored by our students' passion for creating helpful change in themselves, others, and society at large in ways that are empirically effective and humanistically founded. Those changes may derive from research, clinical practice, or community involvement, according to the student's personal and professional goals. The Master of Arts degree requires a minimum of 48 credits, but most students earn 60 credits. In many cases, this is a result of licensure requirements in the students' home states. Time on campus is limited to eight days at the start of each semester, totaling just sixteen days a year. Students work from home the rest of the term, engaged in directed, independent learning designed to address their own chosen interests and objectives. Each student's curriculum is uniquely tailored to fulfill degree requirements while deepening expertise in self-chosen areas of focus. Students are respected as individuals, as learners, and as seekers of their own futures. Skills in practice, research, communication, personal and professional development, and ethics are developed through a holistic approach embracing theory, experience, reason, and self-knowledge. Cultural competency and an awareness of social contexts and issues of social justice are fostered so that students are better prepared to make a difference in their own communities. Experienced faculty members mentor and guide students throughout the program, helping them to attain their goals. Two optional concentration tracks are also offered, in Sexual Orientation and in Organizational Development. Many graduates enter doctoral programs. Accreditation: NEASC
