Review: Center for Democracy and Civil Society, Master of Arts in Democracy & Governance
Degree Offered: Master of Arts in Democracy and Governance Format: Campus
Program Description: Struggles over democracy have become a defining feature of contemporary life, in the U.S. and around the world. These trends have fueled the growth of professional opportunities linked to democracy and democracy promotion. In response we created the innovative two-year Georgetown University M.A. program in Democracy and Governance, designed for those seeking to develop or enhance careers working on behalf of democratic change, governance reform, and human rights. The program, housed in the highly-ranked Department of Government, provides training organized around four central themes: * 1) History and Theories of Democracy and Democratization, * 2) Democracy, Governance, and Institutions, * 3) Democracy and Civil Society, and * 4) Democracy, Governance, and Development Policy. Each core field encompasses issues that are central to an understanding of current debates in the study of democracy and governance, with a balance of applied and theoretical training. Most students supplement their coursework with internships designed to provide valuable hands-on experience. Current students have worked at Democracy International, the National Democratic Institute, the United States Institute of Peace, International Foundation for Election Systems, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Institute for the Study of International Migration, among others.
