Program Description: The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers graduate study leading to the M.A. degree in French, German, Japanese and Spanish (with tracks in literature and applied linguistics) and the Ph.D. degree in French, German, and Spanish. M.A. and Ph.D. degrees are also granted in Applied Linguistcs and Foreign Language Acquisition. In addition, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures participates in curriculum for the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees granted by the Program in Comparative Literature. A minimum of 30 hours of graduate-level course work is required for the M.A. (24 hours for the M.A. thesis option). For the Ph.D., 60 hours of course work beyond the B.A. are required, along with a dissertation (30 credit hours of research). The department offers teaching assistantships to virtually all students who meet its admission requirements. For example, in 2008-2009, graduate teaching assistants will receive a minimum of $13,005 per academic year, plus the remission of most tuition and fees in return for half-time teaching or other staff duties in the department. There are also several scholarships and fellowships available within the department and University. The tuition and fees for Indiana residents for the 2008-2009 academic year are $7,476.Out-of-state students pay $22,950 per academic year. However, graduate teaching assistants do not pay tuition charges, and graduate student fees are only $1,554 this year. The cost of living in West Lafayette is fairly low – students should expect to pay approximately $10,780 for housing, food, books and supplies, and personal expenses. This figure does not include tuition and fees at Purdue. University housing is available for both single and married students and there are numerous apartments close to campus.
