Review: School of Medicine, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
Degree Offered: Ph.D. Format: Campus
Program Description: The graduate Program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is a multi-disciplinary program leading to the Ph.D. degree. It comprises a flexible course of formal and informal instruction combined with intensive practical research training in the frontier areas of modern biochemistry and molecular biology. The program offers the student a wide variety of fields from which to choose a thesis mentor and research topic. Areas of specialization include macromolecular metabolism, protein folding and three-dimensional structure, protein interactions and function, post-translational modifications, transmembrane signaling and other signal transduction systems, neuropeptides, developmental biology, oncogenesis and tumor biology, molecular biology of retroviruses, regulation of gene expression and enzyme function, eukaryotic genome structure, DNA replication, biosynthesis of complex carbohydrates and cell surface glycoproteins, protein engineering, membrane-cytoskeleton interactions, extracellular matrix and developmental neurobiology. There are also unique opportunities in the Medical School for relating Ph.D. training to clinical problems. Some faculty members have affiliations with Jackson Memorial Hospital, the VA Hospital and with the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Research Center.
