Review: McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science, Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences
Degree Offered: MEM, Master of Engineering Management, Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences Format: Campus
Program Description: The Ph.D. program in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences department at Northwestern is an excellent choice for those analytically talented students who are interested in the development of theoretical and practical tools that can be used to solve problems in industry and government. Our research addresses analytical tools and strategies for concerns as diverse as scheduling, planning, distribution, design, location, and control. Application areas range from traditional uses of industrial engineering in manufacturing firms to the broader variety of management science models in the service sector, finance, and public policy. Our faculty members are world-renowned in their areas of research, and have been honored with awards and fellowships from leading professional societies such as INFORMS, IIE and ASA. Many hold appointments to the editorial boards of flagship journals in their fields, including the chief editorship of Naval Research Logistics. Their research is supported by grants from the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, National Security Agency, National Institutes of Health, Office of Naval Research, and many industrial corporate sponsors. Current projects cover a spectrum of theory, computation, and applications, often integrating these aspects within individual studies. PhD graduates in recent years have gone on to academic positions in engineering, business, and applied mathematics at top schools including Purdue, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Rutgers and Berkeley. PhD graduates have also filled corporate research and development positions in such areas as manufacturing, logistics, transportation, communications, finance, and strategic planning. The quality of the department is also reflected in national rankings, where it has been in the top 7 programs in Industrial Engineering for a number of years. Eligibility Requirements: * Excellent grades in Mathematics courses. One way to demonstrate mathematical ability is to take the major field test in Mathematics offered by the Educational Testing Service (formerly the GRE Mathematics subject test). Taking this test is encouraged but not required. * High ranking in graduating class is a plus * Any experience in which the applicant worked independently, whether in research or industry * Strong letters of recommendation showing the individual has demonstrated the personal characteristics that would make them likely to succeed * Statement of purpose that clearly expresses current goals, career plans, and supporting why IE/MS is the area in which the applicant wishes to specialize # of Credits Required: 17 International Student Requirements: - Minimum TOEFL score (if applicable) of 600 or higher on the paper-based test, 250 or higher on the computer-based test, 100 or higher on the internet based test.
