Review: Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Politics

Degree Offered: M.A.- Politics, Ph.D. - Politics Format: Campus
Program Description: Brandeis’ Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Politics emphasize linkages among the patterns of American political development, contemporary American politics, and the politics of other developed and developing democratic systems. The graduate curriculum also addresses the advanced industrial democracies of Western Europe, the democratizing states of Eastern Europe, and the international political, economic, and military-security relations among these states. Methodological emphasis on analytical case study, including comparative case study, rather than abstract mathematical modeling or statistical analysis is also a feature of our program. Substantive emphasis is on the politics of democratic and democratizing regimes. Graduate student research is supported in part by additional funding from the Gordon Center for Public Policy and the Research Circle on Democracy and Cultural Pluralism. Generous scholarships and fellowships are available. Successful applicants to the Ph.D. programs are offered full tuition waivers, a stipend, and health insurance allowance. Most of our master’s students receive generous scholarships in the form of merit- and need-based aid. The graduate program features: * instruction in small seminars under close faculty supervision * supervised independent study within the program * supervised teaching assistantships * opportunities for study in the consortium of universities in the Boston area * the opportunity to incorporate work in related and relevant fields Ph.D. students receive training in each of the major subfields of political science, including qualitative research methods, through graduate-level "field seminars." We encourage you to learn more about our program, located just outside of Boston with its world-renowned academic resources -- an ideal location for internships, research, and career opportunities. As part of the Boston Area Graduate Consortium, Brandeis students are welcome to take advantage of the curricular opportunities at several area schools.
